About this grant

Provides matching capital grants for the restoration, rehabilitation, stabilization, and preservation of historic houses of worship that serve their broader communities. Funded projects address urgent repair needs related to structural components, walls, roofs, and building envelopes, as well as ADA accessibility improvements and renovation of underused space for community outreach. Recipients also receive planning grants and wraparound technical assistance including capital campaign support, communications support, and community engagement services.

Congregation and building information including demographics
Description of historic, cultural, and architectural significance
Description of community-serving programs
Project scope and need narrative
Fundraising plan demonstrating ability to raise 1:1 cash match
Financial information (total income and expenses for most recent fiscal year)
Four high-resolution JPEG photos (exterior, interior, community use, project area)

Eligibility

Property must be located within the United States or its territories
Property must have been originally built as a house of worship
Property must be owned by an active community of faith
Congregation must be at least 3 years old
Congregation must have a positive and supportive relationship with its regional denominational office (if applicable)
Property must possess historical, cultural, or architectural value and/or be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places
Property must have urgent repair needs related to structural components, walls, roof, and/or other elements of the building envelope
All projects must adhere to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation
