About this grant

Supports individuals and organizations developing high-quality academic, cultural, and ethnic studies materials for Minnesota K-12 students from underrepresented communities whose cultures lack a formal writing system and are primarily orally based, including Hmong, Karen, Somali, and Oromo communities. Projects must collaborate with Minnesota school districts or educators who intend to use the materials. Funding comes from Minnesota's Legacy Amendment arts and cultural heritage fund.

Total pool of $400,000 (less allowable administrative fee) available across all awards
Option to receive funding via reimbursement or advance payment
Technical assistance and application feedback from MHC grants administrators
Grant period from November 1, 2026 to November 30, 2027

Letter of support from a Minnesota licensed teacher(s) or school district official(s)
Project budget in MHC's required template
For requests of $50,000+: certified financial audit (if annual revenue $750,000+), IRS Form 990 (if revenue $50,000–$749,999), or board-approved financial statement (if revenue under $50,000)
Identification of individuals responsible for implementation, evaluation, and financial oversight
Description of community involvement in proposal development and project implementation
Description of school district/educator involvement

Eligibility

Applicant must be in good standing with the IRS
Applicant must be in good standing with the Minnesota Humanities Center
Project must develop high-quality academic, cultural, and ethnic studies materials for underrepresented communities without a formal writing system
Materials must support Minnesota K-12 students from communities that are primarily orally based (e.g., Hmong, Karen, Somali, Oromo)
Project must work with school districts that intend to use the materials
Applicant must provide a letter of support from a Minnesota licensed teacher(s) or school district official(s)
School districts are not eligible to apply
Legacy funding may only be used for new work or new additions to existing work
