About this grant

Funds the development of open-source tools, workflows, and documentation that integrate existing education-specific public goods (datasets, benchmarks, models) into AI-enabled formative assessment applications for K-12 education. The work focuses on improving coordination between classroom teachers and AI-enabled technologies, with an emphasis on learning sciences-grounded approaches to formative assessment. Recipients will produce infrastructure-level outputs intended to serve multiple downstream developers of teacher-facing educational products.

18-month grant period across three 6-month phases
Facilitated connections with K12 AI Infrastructure Program awardees and public goods creators
Program support for developer engagement and incentives in Phase 3
Access to pre-public release of public goods from actively funded cohorts
Program officer collaboration to map and refine shared targets for Phases 2 and 3

How to apply

Proposal narrative (maximum 6,000 words) addressing Significance, Assets and Capabilities, Project Plan, and Release and Dissemination
Description of at least four tasks the harness will perform to improve teacher-AI coordination
Project timeline covering all three phases with milestones, deliverables, and responsible team members
Technical approach addressing Rogers (1962) Diffusion of Innovation factors
Community interaction plan for working with public goods creators and downstream developers
List of K12 AI Infrastructure Program and other education-specific public goods to be used
Letters of support from developers (encouraged but not required)
Budget narrative (institutional overhead capped at 15%)

Eligibility

Must be a U.S.-based entity (including U.S. territories)
Eligible entity types include edtech companies, for-profit organizations, non-profit organizations, school districts, and higher education institutions
Non-profits under fiscal sponsorship are eligible
Standard organizations: limit one application per lead organization
Large organizations (2,000+ staff): limit one application per department with distinct team composition
Universities (2,000+ staff): limit one application per major academic division or school with distinct team composition
Outputs must clearly serve U.S.-based students
All outputs must be licensed under MIT License or Apache 2.0 (code) and CC BY 4.0 (datasets and other components)
