About this grant

Provides financial assistance to municipalities, nonprofit land conservation organizations, and water companies to acquire land for open space preservation and watershed protection. Funded projects must offer high conservation and recreational value and leverage private and municipal co-funding. Acquired lands must be preserved in perpetuity in their natural, scenic, and open condition.

Supporting documentation including maps
Title searches
Appraisals (Appraisal Reviews due December 4, 2026)
Endorsement by local Planning, Zoning, Conservation and/or Open Space Commissions
Advisory report and recommendations of the appropriate regional planning agency
Evidence of cost-share matching funds availability

Eligibility

Applicants must be a municipality, non-profit land conservation organization (e.g., land trust), or water company
Water companies must purchase land classifiable as Class I or Class II water supply property and show intent to allow public recreational access
Non-profit land trusts purchasing land in Targeted or Distressed municipalities must obtain approval from the chief elected official or governing legislative body
All lands acquired must be preserved in perpetuity predominantly in their natural, scenic, and open condition
Municipal applicants must have a current Plan of Conservation and Development no more than 10 years old
Applicants must show evidence of compliance with terms and conditions of any previously awarded grants
Applicants must clearly show how the public will access and enjoy the property
Applicants must show reasonable anticipation that cost-share match funding will be available within one year of the State grant being awarded
