About this grant

Funds projects to improve outdoor recreation opportunities through trail construction, maintenance, planning, and support while protecting wildlife, habitat, and cultural resources. Eligible project types include new trail and trailhead construction, trail maintenance and reconstruction, trail planning studies, volunteer capacity building, and trail stewardship crews. The program is funded by Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) and the Federal Recreational Trails Program (RTP).

What you get

Up to $250,000 for construction and maintenance projects
Up to $45,000 for planning and support projects
Up to $150,000 for trail stewardship crew projects
Approximately $2 million available for grant opportunities each year
Access to CPW wildlife review and technical guidance

Letter of intent with basic project scope and site map (due September 4, 2026)
Unique Entity Identifier (UEI)
Letters of support (up to 5 in a single PDF)
Signed letter of resolution
Completed application form (construction, maintenance, trail stewardship, planning, or support)
Maps or photographs (5 page limit)
Project budget or multi-project budget form
Federal or non-federal environmental form
NEPA Environmental Impact Assessment (for projects on federal lands only)

Eligibility

Must be a local, county, federal, or tribal government agency; recreation or metro district; or 501(c)(3) charitable organization
All properties on which funded projects take place must be under the control of the applicant or authorized agent
Properties must be open to the public for at least 25 years
25% of the total grant request must be matched funds, with 10% of that minimum amount in cash
Non-governmental organizations must provide grantee insurance
Must comply with applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and policies including Build America, Buy America
All federal permits must be completed by the applicant presentation date (early January)
Project must be completed within 2 to 2.5 years of grant award
